The vibrant collaborative platform for the Dhaka University Law Dept. Alumni living in the UK
Welcome to the official website of the Bangladesh Law Association (BLA) UK, the unified voice and professional network for University of Dhaka Law Alumni residing in the United Kingdom. Since its establishment in 2006, BLA UK has served as a vibrant collaborative platform dedicated to legal excellence, community impact and shared heritage.
It is a significant fact that The Bangladesh Law Association UK (BLA UK) was formally launched in 2006 in London with a vision to unite and support former students of the Department of Law, University of Dhaka, who are now residing in the United Kingdom. To this day, BLA UK stands as the central platform for this unique alumni community—serving as their collective voice, professional network, and social home abroad.
The Association's formal journey began in 2006, inspired and supported by two distinguished legal minds — Advocate M. Aminur Rashid Khan and Mr. Justice Miftah Uddin Chowdhury, both former Presidents of Bangladesh Ain Samity in Bangladesh. It was agreed early on that while BLA UK would maintain spiritual ties with the Bangladesh Ain Samity, it would operate independently and distinctly within the UK context.
On 17 September 2006, a 27-member Convening Committee was formed with Barrister Nazir Uddin Choudhury as Convener and Solicitor Sohul Ahmed as Member Secretary. This committee was tasked with drafting a constitution and initiating the membership drive. A Constitutional Sub-Committee was also formed, consisting of five dedicated members. Following two years of foundational work, on 22 June 2008, BLA UK held its first Annual Conference, where the draft constitution was formally adopted.
From its inception, BLA UK quickly earned recognition for its meaningful contributions to the British-Bangladeshi community and to broader minority and immigrant communities in the UK. Many of our members have gone on to build impactful careers in the British legal system—as solicitors, barristers, legal academics, and public servants.
A significant milestone was the creation of the Society for British Bangladeshi Solicitors (SBBS), a professional legal body formed through the leadership and initiative of senior BLA UK members. Today, SBBS is widely recognised in the British legal community as a hub for collaboration, advocacy, and professional development.
Currently, BLA UK has nearly 200 active members and their families, who remain closely engaged with its mission. Governed by a formal constitution, the Association is led by an Executive Committee, elected annually through a transparent and democratic process. The most recent election was held on 3rd May 2025 during the 12th Annual Conference, resulting in the formation of a new 31-member Executive Committee with Barrister Muhammad Mujeebur Rahman as its President and Advocate Mahmuda Chowdhury as the General Secretary.
